Help Submittals

Configure Sections

Shape the ordered sections a submittal compiles into, and link the spec sections it answers.

A submittal package lives or dies by its structure, and rebuilding that structure by shuffling PDFs in a merge tool is where afternoons go. Here a submittal is ordered sections, and the page shows them in compile order.

Sections and their roles

Every section has a role that defines its behavior; its title is yours to edit. Roles include Cover, Transmittal, Table of Contents, Comment Response Log, Overview & Safety, Equipment Schedule, Station/Panel BOM, Drawings, Product Data, Equipment Chapters, Testing & Commissioning, Studies, Warranties, Uploaded Content, Supplemental Documents, Specification, Spec Check Results, As-Built Redlines, Emergency Contacts, Competent Persons, and Company Policy Documents.

Some sections build themselves: Cover, Transmittal, Table of Contents, Comment Response Log, Equipment Schedule, Station/Panel BOM, Specification, Spec Check Results, Emergency Contacts, and Competent Persons are generated at compile time and take no routed documents. Emergency Contacts and Competent Persons let you check which of your personnel appear. Emergency Contacts prints your office first when you include it, then the contact you mark as primary, then everyone else by name. Under them it prints the project's nearest hospital, any firm with the Hospital role on the Contact List, and your company's emergency hotlines. The section shows both, with links to change them.

Files you upload to a section

A section's own files print in the order listed. Drag a file's grip, focus the grip and press the up or down arrow key, or use its step buttons to move it. Edit gives a file a printed name, which the Table of Contents and bookmarks use in place of its file name, such as SCAN_0042.pdf. Clear the name to print the file name again. In a Drawings section, Edit also links the file to one of the equipment groups the submittal covers, and it prints as "Panel A: Wiring diagram". A group the submittal no longer covers stays linked and reads "(not on this submittal)" in the list. Deleting the group from the Register removes the link. Each change expires the compile.

A Company Policy Documents section prints one of the policy documents in Settings, Policy documents. Search for it by name in the section, or drop a new PDF there to add it to that list and use it in the same step. To print several policies, add one section for each. A package layout's policy section can hold its document too, so every submittal made from that layout starts with it chosen.

The transmittal

The Transmittal section holds the transmittal form: every box your company's transmittal prints, and nothing it does not. Each value says whether it is this submittal's own edit or a default.

  • Recipient. Until you pick one, it goes to the project's Contracted-with firm, attention its one project contact, else to the primary engineer of record. Add a missing firm or person to the project without leaving the form.
  • Signer. The person who created the submittal, else the company default from Settings > Transmittal. The sheet prints the name, title and date beside a blank signature line.
  • Description lines. On a layout with description rows: the submittal itself, then the project's basis lines, up to the rows the layout prints.
  • Form fields. Boxes such as Submittal for and the deviations follow the company default until you change them here. A box set to first issue is checked on the initial submission, one set to reissue on every later submission.
  • Set. A project fact the layout prints blank, such as the job number or the engineer of record, gets Set, which writes it to the project.
  • Notes. Prints in the NOTES block, and in a cover template anywhere {cover_note} sits. Draft note fills in a starting paragraph from what the submittal records.

Preview shows the transmittal as the next compile prints it. An edit expires the current compile; issued submissions keep every value they went out with.

Add, reorder, rename, delete

  1. Click Configure sections at the right end of the compile strip on the submittal's Contents tab.
  2. Add a section opens a palette of section types, grouped into Front matter, Equipment & product, Closeout & field, and General. A checkmark marks types already added. A Custom Upload gives you a named place for PDFs you'll upload yourself.
  3. Drag the grip to reorder (or focus it and use the arrow keys). This order is the order of the compiled PDF.
  4. The title is the field: type a new name and it saves on its own.
  5. Delete removes a section; deleting a catch-all warns you, since anything no other section claims would become a preparation warning instead of being included.

  1. Configure Sections, step 1: the screen with the control outlined
Step 1 of 6 Start from any submittal. For this example, click New Submittal to make one.
  2. Configure Sections, step 2: the screen with the control outlined
Step 2 of 6 Give it a name and press Enter.
  3. Configure Sections, step 3: the screen with the control outlined
Step 3 of 6 On the submittal page, click Configure sections.
  4. Configure Sections, step 4: the screen with the control outlined
Step 4 of 6 Add a section opens the palette: Front matter, Equipment & product, Closeout & field, and General.
  5. Configure Sections, step 5: the screen with the control outlined
Step 5 of 6 Pick a section type. Specification prints the spec sections linked to the submittal.
  6. Configure Sections, step 6: the screen with the control outlined
Step 6 of 6 Drag the grip to reorder, or focus it and use the arrow keys. This is the compiled PDF's order.

The Specification section prints the pages of each spec section linked to the submittal, primary first, each under its own bookmark. Spec Check Results prints the latest spec check when it is finished and current, with your marks in place of the check's verdicts and "Not stated" for any row the datasheet does not settle. A new run or a changed mark expires the compile. Neither section is in a new submittal until you add it.

Each non-generated section, plus Specification and Spec Check Results, carries an empty policy: Omits when empty leaves it out of the compiled PDF, Placeholder when empty prints a placeholder page instead.

An As-Built Redlines section can attach a finished redline from the project, which is included on compile alongside anything you upload to the section.

The Comment Response Log

On a resubmittal, the Comment Response Log section tracks the reviewer's comments as individual items inside the submittal: add them by hand or import them, respond to each, and the log compiles as its own page. See Comment Response Log.

The Spec section fact in the submittal's header opens the spec links. Link the specification sections this submittal answers: enter a number, browse the sections you've uploaded, or link a suggestion. Each suggestion names the parts it governs or the requirement it answers, and Preview opens its pages in place. Suggestions refresh on their own when the equipment, the spec book or the files uploaded to the submittal change. Mark one as primary and it prints on the cover and transmittal.

Where documents land inside these sections is driven by equipment scope and routing. The sections a new submittal starts with come from its package layout.
